SGCC vs DX51D: What Is the Difference Between These Galvanized Grades?

Importers constantly ask whether SGCC and DX51D are the same material. Short answer: they are the commercial-quality galvanized grades of two different standards families — SGCC under Japanese JIS G3302, DX51D under European EN 10346 — and for most forming and roofing work they are interchangeable. The details matter when your buyer or consultant writes one of them into a contract.

Equivalence Table

Standard Grade Type Typical yield Elongation
JIS G3302 (Japan) SGCC Commercial ~205-300 MPa (not specified) Not specified
EN 10346 (Europe) DX51D+Z Commercial / bending Not specified (max 500 MPa) ≥22%
ASTM A653 (USA) CS Type B Commercial Not specified Not specified

All three are soft, formable commercial grades intended for bending, roll forming and general fabrication — not for structural load calculations. If your project needs guaranteed yield strength, step up to S250GD-S550GD or SGC340-570 structural grades instead.

Which Should You Specify?

If you need deeper forming performance (drawing quality), compare DX52D vs DX51D before ordering.

FAQ

Can a mill certify the same coil as both SGCC and DX51D?

Yes. Chemistry and process are compatible, so dual-standard mill test certificates are common practice for export coils.

Is there a price difference?

No meaningful difference — price is driven by zinc class, thickness and volume, not by which commercial grade name is on the certificate.

Which grade for ductwork and light framing?

Either. Specify by coating (Z100-Z180 typical) and thickness; ask us for a FOB Tianjin quote with both designations on the MTC if your customs broker needs it.
