Steel Coil Weight & Length Calculator
Use our free online steel coil calculator to instantly compute coil weight, coil length, or sheet weight. Supports GI coil, PPGI coil, galvalume, carbon steel, and aluminum. Essential tool for procurement and shipping planning.
Calculate the weight of a steel coil by its dimensions.
How to Use the Steel Coil Calculator
- Coil Weight: Enter outer diameter (OD), inner diameter (ID, usually 508mm or 610mm), coil width, and select material. Get weight in kg and metric tons.
- Coil Length: Enter coil weight, thickness, width, and material to calculate the total length in meters.
- Sheet Weight: Calculate the weight of cut-to-length sheets by entering dimensions and quantity.
Steel Density Reference
| Material | Density (g/cm3) |
|---|---|
| GI / PPGI / Galvanized Steel | 7.85 |
| Galvalume / Aluzinc (AZ) | 7.78 |
| Carbon Steel / HR / CR | 7.82 |
| Aluminum Sheet | 2.70 |
Standard Coil Inner Diameters
Most steel coils are produced with an inner diameter (ID) of 508mm (20 inches) or 610mm (24 inches). Our PPGI and GI coils are supplied with 508mm ID as standard.
Need a quote? Once you have your weight/length figures, contact ChinaCNU Steel for a competitive FOB Tianjin price. We supply GI coil, PPGI coil, galvalume coil, and more with MOQ 25 tons.
Use the Result in Your RFQ
After calculating coil weight and length, review PPGI coil options, GI coil grades and Galvalume coil coatings, then send your specifications for a quote.
Steel Coil Weight and Length Formulas
For carbon steel, GI, PPGI and Galvalume estimates, use a steel density of 7,850 kg/m³. Coatings normally have a small effect on a commercial estimate; use the certified net weight for shipping and invoicing.
Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × Length (m) × 0.00785
Net coil weight (kg) ÷ [Width (mm) × Thickness (mm) × 0.00785]
Worked example
A 1,250 mm wide, 0.50 mm thick steel strip with a length of 1,000 m weighs approximately:
1,250 × 0.50 × 1,000 × 0.00785 = 4,906 kg (about 4.91 tonnes).
Using the result for an RFQ
- Enter nominal dimensions and net coil weight.
- Confirm whether the mill quotes base-metal thickness or total coated thickness.
- Apply the contractual thickness tolerance before estimating final yield.
- Round container planning conservatively and confirm actual packing weights with the supplier.
Calculator Limitations
The result is an engineering estimate. Actual weight can vary because of thickness tolerance, coating mass, paint layers, edge trimming and weighing accuracy. Do not use an estimated value as a certified shipping weight.
Steel Coil Calculator FAQ
What density should I use for galvanized or prepainted steel?
Use 7,850 kg/m³ for a practical steel-coil estimate. For contractual calculations, follow the density and tolerance method stated in the applicable standard or purchase agreement.
Does zinc or paint change the result?
Yes, but the difference is often small for an initial logistics estimate. The mill's certified net weight remains the controlling value for shipment and settlement.
Why does actual coil length differ from the calculator?
Nominal thickness may differ from measured thickness within the agreed tolerance. Coating, paint, trimming and scale calibration can also change actual yield.
